St Timothy Scholarships, Malawi
The Foundation’s first project, started in 2017, is the St. Timothy Scholarship Programme in Malawi. This project, jointly sponsored by the Anglican Diocese of Upper Shire and the Roman Catholic Diocese of Mangochi, funds scholarships to enable boys and girls from some of the poorest families in Malawi to attend secondary boarding schools run by the dioceses on an all expenses paid basis. Secondary education in Malawi is not free. Parents are required to pay school fees and expenses that many cannot afford. As a result, only 15% of young people graduate from secondary school. The scholarships, which have a value of c. €600 per annum, are currently funding a secondary education for 58 young people, 29 girls and 29 boys, whose families could not otherwise afford to send them to school.
